As the detailed map shows, use of the Thornton Bank is limited by many other uses. The choices available for the siting of the wind farm are therefore severely reduced.
The C-Power land area concession
C-Power has chosen a split location which doesn't in any way overlap with the Navy's anti-mine and target practice areas and maintains a minimum distance of 500 metres from the cables and gas pipes and from the individualised sand concession.
The wind turbine configuration within the land area concession
The layout configuration consists of 60 wind turbines with a rotor diameter of 126 metres.
To optimise yield, it is necessary to:
- use the space as intensively as possible and
- maintain a minimum distance between rotors of five to seven times the rotor diameter
The 60 wind turbines are developed to the East (6 x 6 = 36) and to the West (6 x 4 = 24) of the Interconnector Gas Pipe and the Concerto South 1 telecommunications cable.
